The Costa das Baleias Tourist Zone, located on the southern coast of Bahia, includes the municipalities of Prado, Alcobaça, Caravelas, Nova Viçosa and Mucuri, located in the extreme south of the state.
Forming part of the historic Captaincy of Porto Seguro, the Costa das Baleias offers an impressive variety of landscapes, with paradisiacal beaches, ideal for water sports, as well as flowing rivers with clear waters, sand banks and preserved mangroves.

1. Natural beauty and unique experiences
Visitors to the Costa das Baleias will find much more than just beautiful beaches. The region is home to the fascinating Abrolhos Archipelago, of volcanic origin, formed some 50 million years ago. Diving in the clear, warm waters of Abrolhos is an unforgettable experience. The site offers

- Barra do Cahy and Cumuruxatiba: Ideal for those seeking a quiet and rustic environment, perfect for ecotourism. Accessible by dirt roads, these towns are linked to Prado and offer a relaxed atmosphere.
- Alcobaça: This town stands out for its historic colonial buildings, a legacy of Portuguese colonisation. It is also a starting point for exploring the seaside resort of Guaratiba and its beaches.

- Caravelas: Close to the Abrolhos Archipelago, it offers a complete structure for trips to the islands and a cosy atmosphere. Along the coast, close to the city, are the beautiful beaches of Kitongo, Grauçá and Iemanjá in Barra de Caravelas.


- Nova Viçosa: The largest town in the region, famous for its beaches with shops with sunbeds and parasols and excellent restaurants.

- Mucuri: Situated in the extreme south of Bahia, this is a destination with unspoilt beaches, popular with visitors from Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais. The town is busy in summer and quiet during the rest of the year.
