Paulo Afonso Hydroelectric Complex
The city developed around the Paulo Afonso Hydroelectric Complex, inaugurated in 1955, which revolutionised the infrastructure of the Northeast.
Construction began in 1949, with Chesf installing several plants that produce most of the region’s energy. The complex is an attraction in itself, with its huge dams and power stations.
