The name Guarajuba comes from the Tupi-Guarani language and means “golden heron”, a reference to the bird found in the lagoon region.

These areas are protected by the Guarajuba Lagoons Environmental Protection Area (APA), which aims to conserve local biodiversity, especially waterfowl.
