São Jorge Parish Church in Ilhéus (BA): a heritage site of historical, Jesuit and religious art significance
The Parish Church of São Jorge is one of the most important historical monuments in Ilhéus, Bahia. Built in the late 17th century, according to IPAC, it displays Jesuit influences and houses a significant collection of religious art, as well as architectural features typical of the colonial period.

Architecture and key features
The Parish Church of St George is a building of great technical sophistication for its time, comprising:
- Main hall
- High chapel
- Sacristy
- Wing-back
- Tower on the left, with a pyramidal top
The façade consists of two sections. The main section is framed by pilasters and a cornice, and features a central doorway flanked by two doors on the ground floor, as well as two windows at the level of the choir.
The tower has a pyramidal top, with pinnacles at the corners and a round arch. The corner piers, cornices and door, window and arrow slit surrounds are carved from stone. Inside, the cross vault, side niches and the pulpit basin stand out, all made of sandstone.
The ceiling is rounded at the corners of the nave and features a flattened vault in the chancel. The high altar, in the Neoclassical style, remains unfinished.

Image collection and Museum of Sacred Art
Among the church’s most notable features are:
- St George
- A crucifix
- Our Lady of the Rosary
- Saint Peter
In the sacristy and the side aisle, which has been converted into the Museum of Sacred Art, there are pieces of furniture and sacred art of great historical and artistic value, such as:
- Saint’s head
- Pictures of São Miguel
- Our Lady of the Snows (16th century)
- Saint Anthony, Saint Ignatius and Saint Caetano (17th century)
- Silver liturgical vessels and other rare liturgical items
This collection makes the Parish Church of São Jorge a key centre for the preservation of religious art in Ilhéus.

Typological data and Jesuit influence
The church is an elegant building dating from the late 17th century. Some features are characteristic of that period:
- Edging with raised corners
- Tower with a pyramidal top, a design which, according to studies, is believed to have been used for the first time at the Convent of Cairu (1660)
Similar borders can be found in:
- Church of Santa Teresa and the Jesuit House of Prayer, in Salvador
- The Berquó and Sete Mortes manor houses, also in Salvador
- Church of São Brás, in Santo Amaro
Another feature considered archaic are the niches flanking the crossing arch, which are also found at the Colégio de Olinda and in the churches of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda and Belém, in Cachoeira. The presence of these features, combined with the precision of the construction, suggests the possible involvement of an architect associated with the Society of Jesus.
History of the Parish Church of St George
According to IPAC (1988, p. 224), following the arrival of the first Portuguese settlers and the founding of the town of São Jorge, the grantee Francisco Romero established the settlement on the hill of São Sebastião.
In 1556, Dom Pero Fernandes Sardinha is said to have established the Parish of São Jorge, and the first settlers of the captaincy began building a church, which was not completed until 1572.
The present-day Matriz de São Jorge was built later, at the end of the 17th century, following the construction of the Convento de Cairu, which dates from 1660. The church’s original architectural design featured a “T”-shaped plan, a layout typical of 17th-century churches.
In the early 20th century, the right-hand sacristy was demolished to make way for the widening of a street, thereby partially altering the original layout of the complex.
Historical and cultural significance
The Parish Church of São Jorge is considered the most important historical monument in the municipal centre of Ilhéus. In addition to its religious significance, it is notable for:
- For its colonial architectural ensemble
- For the collection of religious art housed in the Museum of Religious Art, next to the church
- Through the historical memory it holds of the founding of the town and city of Ilhéus
