Beaches of the South Coast of Rio Grande do Norte

The South Coast of the State of Rio Grande do Norte comprises a variety of coastal environments, stretching from the Natal Metropolitan Region to the border with the State of Paraíba.

This coastal strip is characterised by landscapes of great scenic and ecological value, including cliffs, dunes, reefs, estuaries and restinga and Atlantic forest vegetation.

1. Cotovelo Beach (Parnamirim)

Cotovelo Beach, located in the municipality of Parnamirim, is known for its red cliffs and calm waters.

In 2025, the Municipality began urbanisation and revitalisation works, including the construction of stairs, access ramps and promenades, with the aim of improving the infrastructure for residents and tourists.

2. Pirangi do Norte Beach (Parnamirim)

Known for being home to the world’s largest cashew tree, Pirangi do Norte Beach is one of the most visited destinations in the state.

During the People’s Summer 2025, the city hall implemented actions focused on safety, leisure and integration, preparing the beach to receive a large number of visitors during the high season.

3. Pirangi do Sul Beach (Parnamirim)

Less busy than its northern neighbour, Pirangi do Sul Beach offers a quieter atmosphere, ideal for families and visitors seeking peace and quiet.

Its calm waters and the presence of reefs make it ideal for swimming and water sports.

4. Búzios Beach (Nísia Floresta)

Búzios Beach, located in Nísia Floresta, is known for its strong waves, which attract surfers and water sports enthusiasts.

In January 2025, it hosted the Verão Consciente (Conscious Summer) project, which promoted environmental education activities, including clean-up operations and exhibitions on the local marine fauna.

5. Tabatinga Beach (Nísia Floresta)

Tabatinga Beach gained national fame when it was voted the Brazil’s Best Tourist Destination for 2025 by Booking.com.

Its colourful cliffs, clear waters and the chance to see dolphins contributed to this recognition.

6. Camurupim Beach (Nísia Floresta)

Camurupim Beach is characterised by its natural pools formed by reefs, making it ideal for families with children.

The presence of Pedra Oca, a rock formation accessible at low tide, is one of the local attractions.

7. Barreta Beach (Nísia Floresta)

Barreta Beach offers a wilder and more unspoilt environment, with natural pools formed by reefs at low tide.

It’s a peaceful option for those seeking direct contact with nature.

8. Malembá Beach (Senador Georgino Avelino)

Located in Senador Georgino Avelino, Malembá Beach is known for its long stretch of sand and dunes, ideal for buggy rides and sports such as kitesurfing.

Tourist infrastructure is limited, which preserves the natural environment.

9. Barra de Tabatinga (Nísia Floresta)

Barra de Tabatinga is characterised by its cliffs and calm waters, ideal for swimming and contemplation.

In 2025, it was recognised as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Brazil.

10. Tibau do Sul Beach (Tibau do Sul)

Tibau do Sul Beach is known for its location between the Guaraíras Lagoon and the sea, offering beautiful scenery and leisure activities such as boat trips and kayaking.

It is one of the main gateways for visitors to the Pipa region.

11. Pipa Beach (Tibau do Sul)

Praia da Pipa is one of the most famous destinations in the state, known for its cliffs, natural pools and vibrant nightlife.

In April 2025, it hosted the Sabores da Pipa Gastronomic Festival, which combined gastronomy, sustainability and culture, attracting tourists from different regions.

12. Madeiro Beach (Tibau do Sul)

Praia do Madeiro is surrounded by cliffs and native vegetation, offering a peaceful environment and favourable for dolphin watching.

It is also a popular spot for surfing and stand up paddle boarding.

13. Cacimbinhas Beach (Tibau do Sul)

Cacimbinhas Beach, known for its long stretch of sand and cliffs, is less crowded and ideal for those seeking tranquillity.

It is also a starting point for paragliding and offers panoramic views of the region.

14. Barra de Cunhaú (Canguaretama)

Barra de Cunhaú, located in Canguaretama, is famous for its clear, warm waters and for being a favourable place for water sports.

The region is also known for its shrimp production and is one of the state’s shrimping centres.

15. Baía Formosa (Formosa Bay)

Baía Formosa is the last municipality on the south coast of Rio Grande do Norte, bordering Paraíba.

In 2025, the Eco Estrela Tourist Complex was announced, a project aimed at luxury tourism, including resorts and condominiums, with a focus on sustainability and local development.
