The town has a rich history dating back to the colonial period, with records dating back to the 18th century. Originally known as Papary, the municipality was renamed in 1948 in honour of Nísia Floresta.

The community of Campo de Santana, in the rural area of Nísia Floresta, is home to the largest concentration of women dedicated to making lace using the labyrinth technique.


Historical heritage
- Centenary Houses
The settlement of Papary, now Nísia Floresta, began to form at the beginning of the 18th century and has several historic buildings, the most important of which is the Mother Church of Nossa Senhora do Ó. - Papary Railway Station
Completed in 1881, the Papary Railway Station now houses the Marina Camarões Restaurant and was declared a Historical Heritage Site by the State of Rio Grande do Norte in 1984. - Mirante dos Golfinhos
Located at the top of the cliffs of Tabatinga Beach, it is an important nursery for sea turtles and dolphins, the latter often appearing in the late afternoon. - Pedra Oca
A cave excavated by the force of the water, it can be visited at low tide and is one of the most visited places on the seafront. - Mother Church of Our Lady
Built between 1702 and 1755, the Mother Church of Our Lady of Ó is the oldest and most important building in Nísia Floresta, with a high altar decorated with pieces imported from Portugal.
