Village of Maracajaú: The tropical paradise of parrachos and marine life

Surrounded by dunes, coconut groves and lagoons, Maracajaú is a small fishing village of around 2,000 inhabitants. Today, the town’s main economic activity is tourism, which has developed due to the natural beauty of the region.

The main attraction of this beach is the coral reef, which is home to an impressive variety of coral fish, making it an ideal place for recreational diving (snorkelling). Maracajaú Beach, also known as the Brazilian Caribbean, is famous for its coral reefs, locally called parrachos, located 7 kilometres off the coast.

At low tide, the parrachos become a vast natural pool of crystal-clear water, with depths varying between 1.0 and 3.0 metres and a rich and fascinating marine biodiversity.

The transparent waters and coral reefs are the main attractions of Maracajaú Beach, located just 55 kilometres north of Natal. One of the most impressive features of the beach is the vibrant colour of the seawater, which is ideal for recreational activities.

Maracajaú is the last beach in the municipality of Maxaranguape. The name, of indigenous origin, comes from the Tupi-Guarani language and means “place where the maracajá cat drinks water”, reflecting the rich local culture.

Maracajaú beach is considered one of the 10 best places in Brazil for snorkelling. In addition, its natural conditions are excellent for scuba diving, providing an unforgettable experience for beginners.

1. Main attractions

1.1 Parrachos de Maracajaú

The Parrachos are coral reefs located about 7 kilometres off the coast.

They are ideal for diving and snorkelling and offer the chance to see a wide variety of fish and other marine life. Boat and catamaran trips are organised to take visitors to the parrachos, where diving equipment can be hired.

1.2 Maracajaú Beach

This beach is known for its natural beauty, white sand and clear waters. It’s a great place to relax and soak up the sun. The beach also offers water sports opportunities such as kite surfing, windsurfing and even paddle boarding.

1.3 Scuba diving

In addition to the parrachos, there are diving opportunities in deeper areas for experienced divers, with the possibility of seeing shipwrecks and fascinating underwater formations.

1.4 Quad biking

Exploring the dunes and landscape around the village, these rides are an exciting way to get to know the region and its natural beauty.

1.5 Ma-Noa Water Park

A water park close to the beach that offers fun for all the family, with swimming pools, water slides and other water attractions, ideal for a day of leisure.

3. Best time to visit

The best time to visit Maracajaú is during the dry season, from September to March, when sea conditions are more favourable for water activities.
