Origin of the name “Natal

The name “Natal” has its roots in the Portuguese word “natal”, which means “birth”. The city was named after Christmas Day, which is celebrated on 25 December.

Natal was founded on this date, 25 December 1599, by Portuguese settlers led by Captain Manuel Rodrigues da Costa.

The name “Natal” thus reflects both the date of its foundation and the importance of the Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
