The Age of Cocoa: Heyday, Crisis and Reinvention

In the 20th century, Ilhéus was a major exporter of cocoa, leading to the construction of mansions and the accumulation of wealth. From the 1980s onwards, the witch’s broom disease and price volatility triggered a severe crisis. There are currently recovery initiatives underway — resistant cloned seedlings and economic diversification, including technology and tourism.

Events and tourism infrastructure

Ilhéus hosts events all year round: cruises, fishing tournaments, fairs and sporting competitions. The district of Olivença offers good tourist facilities and serves as a gateway to beaches and hiking trails.
