Origin of the name Canavieiras
Affectionately known as Canes by locals and tourists alike, Canavieiras grew out of the cultivation of cacao.
The name dates from the 17th century, when a family called Vieira cultivated sugar cane in the region.

1. Historic Centre
The town of Canavieiras has a charming historic centre, known as the “Historic Site”, where cobbled streets are lined with restored 18th and 19th century mansions.

Next to the Pardo River is an area dedicated to the memory of the Cocoa Cycle, with preserved historic buildings. The main attractions are
- Praça da Bandeira
- Historic quarter with colourful 19th and 20th century houses
- City Hall (since 1899) and the City Library (since 1900)
- The Port Gallery, which houses period objects, antique furniture, clothing, whale bones and jewellery belonging to the wives of the cocoa colonels.

The centre also has charming restaurants that provide a beautiful setting for a romantic dinner.
2. Tours
Canavieiras is one of the best blue marlin fishing destinations in the world and is surrounded by beautiful beaches. Tour options include:
- Boat trips along the Rio Pardo, exploring mangroves and riverside communities.
- Una Ecopark, a reserve with trails and wildlife watching, including the golden lion tamarin.
- Historical Centre, where you can immerse yourself in the history of the cocoa cycle.
3. Pardo River

- Barra do Peso (deserted beach)

4. Una Ecopark
Created in 1997, the park covers 383 hectares of Atlantic Forest, with trails, rubber plantations and observation bridges. You can see species such as the golden lion tamarin, capuchin monkey and sloth. The tour takes about two hours and must be booked in advance.
5. Sport Fishing
Canavieiras is one of the world’s top spots for sport fishing, especially for blue marlin, which can weigh up to a tonne. The best time to fish is in summer, with world championships in November and December.

With more than 40 kilometres of coastline, Canavieiras has several paradisiacal beaches. Some of the most famous are
6.1 Atalaia Beach
Located on Atalaia Island, it is home to a fishing village, inns and kiosks.
6.2 North Beach
Located to the south of Comandatuba Island, it has 11 kilometres of Atlantic Forest and is ideal for hiking.
6.3 Barra do Albino Beach
Known for its beautiful coconut groves, it has good infrastructure and is popular for swimming and surfing.
6.4 Costa Beach
The most famous and popular beach in Canavieiras, it is 6 kilometres long and ideal for surfing and swimming. It has bars and restaurants serving seafood.
6.5 Barra de Canavieiras beach
With a wide stretch of sand, it is ideal for sports and walks. Its calm waters are ideal for swimming.
6.6 Barra Velha Beach
A bucolic beach with mangroves, rivers and coconut palms. Access is by dirt road and ferry.
6.7 Patipe Beach
A mix of fresh and salt water, this is a windsurfing and kayaking spot.
6.8 South Beach
Accessible only by boat on the Rio Pardo, it is surrounded by mangroves and coconut palms and is excellent for fishing.

How to get to Canavieiras
The nearest airport to Canavieiras is Ilhéus Airport, which receives daily flights from several Brazilian capitals. The journey from Ilhéus to Canavieiras takes approximately 1.5 hours and can be reached via the BA-001 motorway.
For those who prefer to travel by car, the journey from Salvador is longer, about 430 km, also on the BA-001.
For those who choose to travel by bus, the Águia Branca, Novo Horizonte and São Geraldo companies operate the route to Canavieiras, with departures from Ilhéus.
