Nova Viçosa: What to do and where to go

Discover Nova Viçosa: the enchanted gateway to the Abrolhos Archipelago and its stunning beaches

The last village along the Costa das Baleias is Nova Viçosa, where you will find seven beautiful beaches and the island of Coroa Vermelha – great for snorkelling.

Two of the beaches at Nova Viçosa – Pau Fincado and Lugar Comum – are very popular with beach volleyball players. The last two beaches – Sabacuí and Costa do Atlântico – are somewhat deserted and excellent for bass and shrimp fishing.

In Costa do Atlântico there is a small fishing village.

About two hours by boat from Nova Viçosa you’ll find coral reefs in the sea, perfect for snorkelling.

A little further north is Ilha da Coroa Vermelha, a deserted island with spectacular underwater views. This marine area is on the way to the Abrolhos Marine Park.

The town is considered the gateway to the Arabolhos Archipelago, a region not to be missed for those wishing to explore a variety of tourist attractions. In addition, Nova Viçosa is home to some of the region’s best hotels and inns, offering comfort and hospitality.

The city’s first urban centre was founded in 1720 by the Captain of the Conquests. João Domingos Monteiro and was called Vila Viçosa.

The town’s history is remarkable and is reflected in every corner, especially in the historic houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, which preserve the essence and charm of past times.

1. Historical heritage

1.1 Mother Church of Our Lady of the Conception

A building with a programme consisting of a nave, a choir, a tower with external access and a pyramidal spire. There is a small sacristy next to the Epistle.

The main body, which corresponds to the nave, has a central door and three windows at the level of the choir, all with arched lintels.
The main body is crowned by a jagged pediment.

The tower has an entrance door surmounted by a window at the level of the choir and a bell tower, all with full arches.

1.2 Town hall and prison

It is a two-storey building with a rectangular plan. The façade, framed by corner stones and cornices, is crowned by a triangular pediment with the coat of arms of the Republic in the centre.

On the ground floor, there is a doorway with an arched lintel flanked by two windows with iron grilles. On the upper floor, five single lancet windows complete the façade.

1.3 Railway Station

A rectangular building consisting of two juxtaposed bodies. The ground floor was used as a warehouse, while the upper floor housed the administration and the passenger lounge. It has French tile roofs with lambrequins and a boarding platform covered by a zinc roof.

On the ground floor, the sobrado has a door flanked by two windows, while the upper floor has three windows with a central pediment decorated with a small lobed oculus.

Historic building with a rectangular plan. The main façade has a door and two windows on the ground floor and four windows on the first floor, all with arched surrounds and lintels. The front hall is lit by two side windows.

2. Beaches of Nova Viçosa

2.1 Pau Fincado Beach

Straight beach with small waves and thick, yellowish sand. It is very crowded, with snack bars and an infrastructure of restaurants and campsites.

The name comes from a tree brought by the sea and planted in a small square near the town hall.

2.2 Lugar Comum Beach

An urban beach with golden sand, coconut palms and warm, calm waters. It’s a popular spot in summer, especially for the “Iuar” (moonlight party).

2.3 Barra Beach

With murky waters due to its proximity to the mouth of the River Peruípe. The beach is quiet and in front of it is the island of Cassumba.

2.4 Sabacuí beach

A long cove with gentle waves and coarse sand, ideal for fishing sea bass and prawns. It has a selection of inns, restaurants and campsites.

2.5 Costa do Atlântico beach

A fishing village with a beach of strong waves and warm water. The sand is thick and golden, surrounded by undergrowth and coconut palms. It is famous for its sea bass and prawn fishing.

2.6 Pontal Beach

Urban beach with white, pebbled sand. At low tide, small lagoons form on the sandbanks. The atmosphere is rustic, with coconut palms and pitangueiras.

3. Other attractions

3.1 Cassumba Island

The most diverse island in the region, with mangrove, cerrado, restinga and Atlantic rainforest along its 24 km length.

Fed by a maze of rivers, it is inhabited by several families. It is the starting point for Barra Velha and Pontal do Catoeiro.

3.2 Reefs and Coroa Vermelha Island

Sandbanks form small beaches in the open sea, ideal for snorkelling and wildlife watching. It has a lighthouse and impressive underwater landscapes. It can be reached by boat in about 2 hours from Nova Viçosa.

3.3 Barra Velha on Cassumba Island

Deserted beach with fine yellow sand, ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Nudism is practised in some areas.
