Natural features

Surrounded by the Atlantic Forest, this little paradise is eight kilometres long and occupies an area that resembles a 15-pointed star.

Each of them has a beach. The natural features are so numerous that Ilha dos Frades was declared an ecological reserve in 1982.

Biodiversity and conservation

Coconut groves, mountains, lakes, waterfalls and vegetation typical of the Atlantic Forest, with native trees, including pau-brasil, make this piece of land an ecological sanctuary. All this is well preserved, creating a rustic and natural atmosphere. -Brazil, made this piece of land an ecological sanctuary.

All of this has been well preserved, creating a rustic and natural atmosphere that still reigns on the island. Electricity, for example, was only introduced in 2003, before which everything was lit by candlelight and generators.

Legend of the island

According to legend, the island got its name after the Tupinambás Indians who lived in the area killed two friars who had come to convert them to Christianity. The name stuck and the locals still believe the story.

The presence of religious figures can be seen in the two churches on Ilha dos Frades.

  • Our Lady of Loreto, built between 1640 and 1645 by Francisco da Costa, the owner of the island at the time. It underwent major renovations in 1756.
  • There is little information about the founding of the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Brother Agostinho de Santa Maria stated in 1711: “This house of Our Lady is very old, so there is no memory of it, nor is there any record of when it was founded; but it is said that the founder’s name was Domingos Rodrigues, and that he was very devoted to Our Lady, who was the Mistress of these lands”.

Accommodation is usually in local homes and small, very basic guesthouses.

History of Friars’ Island

Origin of the name

The name “Frades” (Friars), which gives the island its name, is said to derive from a tragic story. According to the accounts of religious figures, a group of friars managed to reach the island after surviving a shipwreck, only to be devoured by the Tupinambás Indians who inhabited the region.

Historic churches

Two churches make up the historic landscape of Ilha dos Frades. The first is the Church of Our Lady of Loreto, built in honour of the Baron of Loreto between 1640 and 1645.

The second is the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a chapel founded by the Jesuits in the 17th century, although the exact date is not known.

Ruins and ancient structures

On the island, there are ruins of an old lazaretto, a kind of hospital where sick slaves were kept in quarantine. Elsewhere, there was a warehouse where slaves were kept to fatten them up before being sold.

O Farol da Ilha dos Frades faz parte do local onde o próprio nome da ilha tem relação com o período colonial no Brasil
The Farol da Ilha dos Frades (Lighthouse of the Brothers’ Island) is part of the site where the name of the island itself is related to Brazil’s colonial period.

Ownership and occupation

Although there are few official historical records, it is believed that the island has had several owners throughout its history. However, unlike the islands of Maré and Bom Jesus dos Passos, the settlement characteristics of Ilha dos Frades have kept it isolated and sparsely populated, making it impossible to record any territorial acquisitions.

Biodiversity conservation

The occupation never fully took hold, which has ensured that the island has preserved much of its biodiversity.
