Biography of Morais Moreira: The career of the Bahian singer and composer
Antônio Carlos Moreira Pires (Morais Moreira) was born on 8 July 1947 in Ituaçú, Bahia.

Early career
Growing up in the hinterland of Bahia, Morais Moreira began playing the accordion at an early age, later switching to the guitar. These instruments helped to shape his musical style and artistic career.
Biografia de Morais Moreira
In 1966 he moved to Salvador, Bahia, where he came into contact with rock and roll and the work of Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo. #
He got a job in a bank and during guitar nights at the boarding house where he lived, he met Paulinho Boca de Cantor and Luís Galvão, with whom he formed the group Os Novos Baianos, which debuted in 1968.
Solo career and success in carnival
In 1975, Morais Moreira left the group to pursue a solo career. From then on, he was one of the people responsible for the creation and growth of street carnival in Salvador.
Contributions to street carnival
Morais Moreira made a significant contribution to street carnival in Salvador, especially from the 1970s onwards.
He was one of those responsible for the affirmation and growth of this event, helping to shape its identity and popularity.
- Musical innovation: As a singer and composer, Morais introduced new rhythms and compositions that became Carnival classics, such as “Pombo correio” and “Festa do interior”.
- Trio Elétrico: He stood out as a singer in the Trio Elétrico of Dodô e Osmar, one of the most emblematic groups of the Bahian Carnival, contributing to the transformation of the street parties and the popularisation of this format.
- Projeto Brasil: In 1983, he launched Projeto Brasil, a series of concerts promoting carnival music, integrating elements of frevo and marchas. This contributed to the renewal and strengthening of carnival traditions.
- Defending authenticity: Morais Moreira was also critical of the organisation of Carnival, expressing his concern about the loss of authenticity and the excess of tourists, and seeking a more acoustic and integrative path between the classical and the popular in his music.
These factors, among others, consolidated Morais Moreira as a central figure in the history of street carnival in Salvador, helping to define its evolution and cultural relevance.
In 1976, he had a great success as a singer with the Trio Elétrico of Dodô e Osmar at the Bahia Carnival. In 1978, he released Pombo Correio, which became a huge hit at the national carnival.
Projeto Brasil and a new musical direction
From 1983, Morais Moreira developed the Projeto Brasil (Brazil Project), a series of concerts in the country’s capitals with a carnival repertoire, frevos and marches such as “Grito de guerra” and “Festa do interior”. Disappointed with the organisation of the Salvador Carnival (excessive number of tourists, loss of authenticity in favour of spectacle, etc.), he began to direct his work as a composer and performer in a more acoustic direction, with greater integration between classical and popular music.
This new phase resulted in two albums: O Brasil tem concerto and Morais Moreira acústico. In 1991 he released the album Cidadão with “Leda”, a collaboration with Paulo Leminski. In 1993 he released Terreiro do mundo, featuring “Agradeça ao Pelo” (with Neguinho do Samba).
Celebrations and compositions
Morais Moreira celebrated his 50th birthday in 1997 with the CD Estados, which included the hit Sinal de vida. He also released the CD 50 Carnavais on Virgin, featuring seven new songs and five re-recordings of old hits.
Among his most important compositions are Que papo é esse and Cidadão (with Capinam), Arco-íris (with Sivuca and Glorinha Gadelha), Rádio Cidadão (with Fred Gois), Estado de graça (with Armandinho), Meninas de Minas Gerais (with Tony Costa and Guilherme Maia), Os carapintadas and Festa do interior (with Abel Silva), Forro do ABC (with João Santana), Monumento vivo (with Davi Morais, his son, recorded by Daniela Mercury), Acabou chorare, Preta pretinha, É ferro na boneca, De Vera, Colégio de Aplicação and Felicidade no ar (these six with Luís Galvão).

The main performers include Gal Costa, who made “Festa do interior” the most played song of 1982, Maria Bethânia, Simone, Fagner, Ney Matogrosso, Zizi Possi, Elba Ramalho, Marisa Monte and Daniela Mercury.
