1638 Map of South America – Historical Map

Mapa da América do Sul de 1638
This is an important decorative map of the continent and an essential piece for any South American collection. The coastlines are well detailed, but the interior is full of misinformation. Several rivers (including the Amazon and the Paraguay) flow into the Lago de los Xarayes. The mythical Parime Lacus dominates the interior of Guyana. The map is richly decorated with ships and sea monsters in the oceans and vignettes of villages and animals on the continent. The large title cartouche shows native peoples and animals. “Americae Pars Meridionalis”, Hondius, Henricus
