Triunfo: Explore the beauty and history of Pernambuco’s hinterland
Triunfo, located in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, is known as the “Oasis of the Sertão” due to its pleasant climate, its mountainous landscapes and its rich cultural heritage.
This charming city is a destination that combines natural beauty and history, offering visitors an authentic experience in the heart of Northeastern Brazil.

The city of Triunfo, PE
Triunfo, in Pernambuco, enjoyed a few years of economic boom – mainly in the 1920s – that were enough to earn it the title of “Princess of the Sertão”.
Although the elite of Triunfo, located 450 kilometres from Recife, declined with the sugar cane and coffee plantations, their mark is still visible in the city’s buildings.
Historical monuments
Around the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora das Dores, with its Neo-Gothic lines, and around the beautiful Borborema Reservoir in the centre, the houses with old, well-preserved façades are an attraction.
The Guarany Theatre recalls the glory days, while the Cangaço Museum has an important collection from the time when bandits ruled the northeast.

The famous João Barbosa Sitônio Reservoir, located in the city centre, is adorned by the presence of the Cine Teatro Guarany, inaugurated in 1922 and built with rock and whale oil to support the three floors of the building, one of the 20 Wonders of Pernambuco.
And don’t forget the cable car, whose seats move over the mountains of Triunfo, over the waters of the reservoir.
Anyone who visits Triunfo will get a real lesson in architecture, history and culture. It’s a city of hospitable people, surrounded by mountains and evergreen vegetation.

Dedicated to the history of the Cangaço, a bandit movement in northeastern Brazil, with emphasis on figures such as Lampião and Maria Bonita.

Founded in 1971, the museum houses a collection of weapons, clothing, photographs and objects from the cangaceiros – from Corisco’s dagger to a 1916 tray that belonged to Lampião and an old accordion.
Also in the same building are the City Museum, with everyday objects collected from Triunfo homes, and the Sacred Art Museum, which highlights the “roda dos enjeitados”, where unwanted babies were left by their mothers to be raised in convents or monasteries.
5. Guarany Theatre
This is one of the oldest operating theatres in Brazil. It offers a variety of cultural shows and is a beautiful example of historical architecture.
The idea of building the great Guarany Theatre came from the merchant brothers Manuel and Carolino Siqueira Campos.

Inaugurated in 1922, the Guarany had a brief period of glory and fell into disrepair in the 1920s due to the political and economic decline of Triunfo.
The theatre functioned as a bar and underwent many changes to its interior, but today it has returned to its original function and opens for performances on special dates, seating up to 180 people, and is open to the public all year round.
6. Mother Church of Our Lady of Sorrows
This church is a symbol of the faith and history of Triunfo, with impressive architecture and a central location in the town.

7. Rapadura Mill
Triunfo is the rapadura capital of the Pernambuco interior, with more than sixty rustic, centuries-old sugar mills in operation, producing the “sugar brick” that is ubiquitous on north-eastern tables between July and December.
The São Pedro sugar mill, the most organised, produces organic cachaça and liqueurs all year round (sítio Bela Vista, rural area, 500m from the centre).

8. Papagaio Peak
The Peak is the highest point in Pernambuco, with an altitude of 1,260 metres. To get to the top, you have to drive about nine kilometres on a bumpy road full of boulders, but at the end you are rewarded with a beautiful view of the region.

Francisco Pinheiro, known as Chico Santeiro, travelled extensively in the Sertão before settling in Triunfo.
Today he is considered the city’s greatest artist – a reputation well deserved, as his wooden saints are truly remarkable, with expressive features, luxurious clothing, curvaceous postures, a striking style and exquisite workmanship.
