Famous for being home to the legendary Hippie Village, which has hosted personalities such as Janis Joplin and the Novos Baianos, Arembepe combines quiet beaches, natural pools, environmental projects such as the Tamar Project, and a simple way of life connected to nature.
It’s the ideal destination for those seeking peace and quiet, culture and a touch of tropical nostalgia.

Hippie village and counterculture
The most famous hippie village in Brazil was born here, enchanting personalities such as Janis Joplin, the Novos Baianos and even Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who passed through at the end of the 1960s.
The village lies between the dunes that separate the sea from the Capivara River. Today it has about 25 houses and 60 inhabitants who live from handicrafts, ecotourism and alternative culture.

The rustic mud, stone and glass huts blend in with the restinga vegetation, creating a unique and intimate setting.
Although the heyday of the movement was in the 1970s, the hippie soul lives on, with residents committed to keeping the local culture alive through musical performances, fairs, exhibitions and educational activities.
Tamar Project: Environmental protection and education
Arembepe is home to one of the oldest units of the Tamar Project, which opened in 1982.
The centre is dedicated to the protection of sea turtles and offers interactive tanks, animal skeletons, educational videos and guided tours.
Walking along the beach you can see the markings that indicate turtle nests, an educational and exciting experience.
🏖️ Beaches and natural pools
Arembepe’s central beach has a barrier reef that forms natural pools ideal for swimming, especially at low tide.
If you want to relax, this is the best option. For those looking for a bit more adventure, Piruí Beach offers perfect waves for surfing and a more secluded and peaceful atmosphere.
Another highlight is the Capivara River, which invites you to take a refreshing dip when it’s full. Praia do Canto, to the north of the village, is known for its coral reefs and tranquillity.

🏘️ A charming village with a Bahian soul
The centre of Arembepe has been renovated and now boasts a revitalised square, the Church of São Francisco de Assis (built at the beginning of the 20th century), small markets, craft shops and restaurants serving typical Bahian food, especially seafood.
If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, visit the Handicraft Centre and have a chat at the famous Bar do Alceu, known for its welcoming atmosphere and good conversation.
Nature and ecotourism
Arembepe is located within the North Coast APA, which guarantees the preservation of the local flora and fauna. The region is ideal for birdwatching, ecological walks and hiking.

The restinga vegetation, the mangroves, the dunes and the confluence of the river and the sea form a stunning natural mosaic.
Cultural events and conservation
During the summer, the village comes alive with cultural fairs, beach holidays and events linked to the history of the hippie village. The Arembepe Traders and Service Providers Association has put up banners and information panels in the squares to tell visitors about local history.
According to residents, projects are underway to have the village recognised as a Cultural Heritage site and to consolidate an annual programme of activities.
How to get there
Arembepe is located approximately 42 km from Salvador, or 40 minutes by car from Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport, via BA-099 (Estrada do Coco). The village can also be a base for exploring other nearby beaches, such as Praia do Forte (35 km) and Imbassaí (41 km).

Conclusion
Arembepe is a haven where nature, history and freedom coexist in harmony, an ideal destination for those seeking tranquillity, alternative culture and an authentic experience on the north coast of Bahia.
