The name Pindobaçu comes from the Tupi-Guarani language and means “big palm tree”, referring to the fact that there have always been many babassu palms in the town.

The municipality of Pindobaçu is located in the central north of Bahia, more precisely in the micro-region of Senhor do Bonfim, bordering the municipalities of Campo Formoso, Antônio Gonçalves, Mirangaba, Filadélfia, Saúde and Ponto Novo.

However, the city, with an area of less than 500 square kilometres, is home to more than 200 emerald mines, attracting many people in search of the precious stones left behind by the miners.
