History of the Community

In the 1980s, the community of Tatajuba faced a major challenge when it was buried by the dunes.

However, this did not deter the fishing families, who picked themselves up and founded a new village known as Nova Tatajuba.

Since then, the local population has lived in harmony with nature, maintaining their traditional way of life, which dates back to the 19th century.

Ecosystem and Access

Due to its geographical location and the fact that it is difficult to reach—access is only possible via 4×4 vehicles—Tatajuba remains almost untouched.

The local ecosystem consists of a variety of fixed and shifting dunes, mangroves, lagoons, cliffs, permanent ponds and interdune ponds, which connect to the sea at certain times of the year.

This ecological diversity not only preserves nature, but also provides a unique setting for outdoor activities.

Community-based tourism

The traditional community of Tatajuba currently welcomes tourists and visitors through community-based tourism.

This form of tourism offers an authentic and enriching experience, allowing visitors to discover the local culture and engage with nature in a sustainable way.

3. How to get there

To get to Tatajuba Beach, you usually need to set off from Jericoacoara or Camocim. From Jericoacoara, it is about a 30 km journey, part of which is along sandy tracks, so a 4×4 vehicle is recommended.

There are three ways to get to Tatajuba.
  • The first option is to travel from Fortaleza to Sobral via the BR-222 or the Estrada do Sol Poente, and from there to Granja via the CE-362.

From there, just take the tarmac road to the district of Parazinho.

From this point onwards, you can only continue by 4×4 or buggy, as the road to Tatajuba is very sandy.

  • The second option is to follow the same route as for Jericoacara.

After passing through the town of Gijoca, at the junction leading to Jeri, take the other road and follow the dirt track to the Guriu Settlement, travelling along the beach – ideally in a 4×4 vehicle.

  • The third option is to head to Camocim, cross the Coreaú River by ferry, and then take a buggy along the beach to Tatajuba.

If you’re travelling in a small car, the second option is the best. If you’re travelling by bus, the third option is the best. If you’re travelling in a 4×4, the first two options are both suitable.

4. Where to stay

The Tatajuba Residents’ Community Association (Acomota) is part of the Ceará Community Tourism Network (Tucum) and coordinates accommodation for visitors in local homes and guesthouses.

Most visitors choose to stay in Jericoacoara, where there is a wide range of guesthouses, hotels and hostels. Tatajuba offers some more rustic and charming options for those seeking a more peaceful and immersive experience.
