Origin of the name
The name “Jericoacoara” has indigenous roots and reflects the local history and culture. One theory suggests it derives from the term “Iriquixaba,” which can be translated as “place where nets are made.”
Other etymological theories often link “jara” to “sand” and “cora” to “place” in the indigenous language.
Originally a fishing village, the town has seen its name evolve over time into its current form—a combination that reflects the community’s strong connection to the sea, fishing, and the natural landscape.
Best time of year and conditions
Best time for wind and water sports: July through December (winds are most consistent between August and November). Rainy season: January through June—ideal for full lakes. Always check the local forecast before engaging in water sports.

Must-see attractions
Sunset Dune
Climb the dune in the late afternoon to see one of Brazil’s most famous sunsets—many tourists sandboard down the dune.

Hollow Rock
Jeri’s Icon: a rock formation with a “hole” in the middle. The best time to reach the base is at low tide; if the tide is high, Serrote (a nearby hill) offers a spectacular view.

Paradise Lagoon and Blue Lagoon
The region’s lagoons feature shallow, warm waters with hammocks suspended over the water—perfect for relaxing and taking photos. Access is usually via 4×4 or buggy tours.

Main beaches
Jericoacoara Beach forms natural pools at low tide; Malhada Beach is popular with surfers; Preá is the go-to spot for kitesurfing.

Lagun Beach Club (Lagun Beach)
A family-friendly beach club between Preá and Caiçara, featuring a turquoise artificial lagoon, themed pools, a zip line, and family-friendly amenities—a growing favorite on itineraries along the east coast.

Blue Hole (Caiçara)
A lagoon with deep blue waters, accessible via trails along the east coast; it features decks and visitor facilities, making it a popular spot for swimming and taking photos.

The Alchymist Beach Club
A sophisticated beach club on the shores of Lagoa do Paraíso, featuring a restaurant, VIP area, and pier—a must-visit for those seeking daytime relaxation by the lagoon.

Munzuá Pier Club
Pier Club in the Lagamar area, featuring a swim-up bar, a pool, speedboat rides, and live music—a frequent stop on tours of the east coast.

Mangue Seco
Where the Guriú River meets the sea, with mangroves and canoe tours to spot seahorses; part of itineraries that extend to Tatajuba.

Tatajuba Beach (Nova Tatajuba)
Tatajuba Beach and its surrounding lagoons offer calm beaches, lakeside restaurants, and dune landscapes—a popular spot for lunch and leisurely water activities.

Jericoacoara Square (Edvá Esmerino Square / Main Square)
The town’s central square: a gathering place with canoe-shaped benches, thatched-roof kiosks, and restaurants all around. At night, it’s the heart of the local scene.
