Legends and History
The legend of St Michael the Archangel
It is said that a fisherman found an image of St Michael the Archangel in the sea, which cured him of a serious illness. The former parish of Nossa Senhora, which resisted the Dutch invasions, became a town in the 19th century.
History of the town
São Miguel dos Milagres is one of the oldest towns in Alagoas. It became famous for the discovery of the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel and for its sugar and coconut production. In 1960, it achieved its emancipation.
Events and gastronomy
São Miguel dos Milagres is famous for its Seafood Festival and Patron Saint’s Fiestas, celebrated on 21 January and 7 June. The local gastronomy, rich in seafood, is a special attraction.
