As with most of the beaches in Alagoas, one is more beautiful than the other, with crystal clear waters, fine sands, coral reefs and lots of coconut palms.

History and location

Barra de Santo Antônio is located 44 kilometres from Maceió and grew out of a settlement founded by the Dutch in the 17th century.

The city is crossed by the Santo Antônio River, on the right bank of which are the administrative and service centres, while the tourist attractions are concentrated on the left bank.

Here you’ll find beautiful historic buildings, such as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, and natural wonders, such as the Island of Croa.

The cheerful Barra de Santo Antônio is famous for its lively Carnival and other festivals, such as the June Festival, the Summer Festival in September and the festival of the patron saint, São Sebastião, in January.

Beaches at Barra de Santo Antônio

Carro Quebrado Beach belongs to the town, surrounded by cliffs with multicoloured sands and recognised as one of the most beautiful in the Northeast.

1. Ilha da Croa Beach

Located in the oldest part of the city, it is actually a peninsula dotted with natural pools and bordered by a line of reefs.

If you’re travelling by car, you can reach it by ferry, a journey that takes no more than five minutes. The same time is taken by tourists on foot who take a boat or sloop.

2. Carro Quebrado

To get to the city’s most famous beach, cross the Santo Antônio River to the Island of Croa; from there it’s about 6km along a dirt road with no signs, lined with coconut trees. A guide is recommended.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll be greeted by an unforgettable landscape: the coloured sands of the cliffs range from deep purple to beige. If the weather is good and the tide is low, it’s worth extending your trip to the Morro Beach and the Pedra do Cebola, both of which are deserted, with transparent waters and cliffs.

3. Tabuba Beach

Located at the mouth of the Sapucaí River, Tabuba Beach, 4 kilometres from Barra de Santo Antônio, has natural pools with very clear water.

The soft white sand is perfect for sunbathing. On a clear day, raft trips depart from the beach.

4. Maré Mansa Beach

Known for its unspoilt vegetation, this beach is a quiet and pleasant spot, ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Located next to a village, it has a more rustic atmosphere.

Barra de Santo Antônio offers a combination of water activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddling and snorkelling, especially in the areas with natural pools.
