The origin of the name “Florianópolis

The name “Florianópolis” comes from Marshal Floriano Peixoto, the second president of Brazil, who ruled from 1891 to 1894.

The city was founded on 23 March 1894, during his administration, and was given the name “Florianópolis” in recognition of its political and military importance at the time.

Before being called Florianópolis, the city was known as Desterro, a name that refers to the act of exile, as the region was initially populated by people who had been exiled or banished. The name change to Florianópolis symbolised a new phase for the city, reflecting its growth and development as an urban centre in Brazil.

The suffix “opolis” means “city” in Greek, so Florianópolis can be translated as “City of Floriano”.

Adventure and Ecotourism

  • Nature Trails: The island is surrounded by lush vegetation, including areas of Atlantic Forest. Hiking trails lead to stunning viewpoints such as Morro da Lagoa, where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the island and its beaches.
  • Wildlife: The region’s diverse ecosystems provide habitats for various species of birds, marine life and native plants, making it an excellent destination for ecotourism enthusiasts.

Accessibility

  • Transport: Although the public transport system is efficient, it is essential to plan your routes, especially during the summer months when traffic can be heavy. Hiring a car is a popular option for exploring the island at your own pace.

Cultural and social life

Florianópolis is also a vibrant cultural and social centre. The city is known for its cultural diversity, reflected in its festivals, traditions and the hospitality of its people. The Azorean influence is strong in many aspects of local life, from the cuisine to the festivities.

  • Cuisine: The island’s cuisine is rich and varied, with seafood dishes such as the famous shrimp sequence and grilled mullet standing out. Restaurants, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, offer a culinary experience to suit all tastes.
  • Festivals and events: In addition to the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo, Florianópolis hosts other important events, such as the Festa Nacional do Pêssego, which celebrates the harvest of this fruit. The Winter Festival and the Florianópolis Music Festival attract artists and visitors, promoting local and national culture.

Outdoor activities

The island is a paradise for lovers of nature and outdoor activities. From nature trails to extreme sports, the possibilities are endless.

  • Trails and walks: Trails such as those leading to Laguna do Peri or Morro do Campestre offer unique experiences of contact with nature and spectacular views. Many are suitable for families and beginners, while others will challenge the most experienced walkers.
  • Extreme sports: For the more adventurous, the island offers activities such as paragliding, trekking and canyoning. Places like Praia Mole and Joaquina are popular with surfers and bodyboarders, attracting sports enthusiasts from all over Brazil and the world.
