Lauro de Freitas is a growing municipality in the state of Bahia, part of the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (RMS) and the so-called North Coast.
With an area of approximately 57.94 km² and an estimated population of 217,960 in 2024, it has one of the highest population densities in the state.

Vilas do Atlântico and the high standard of living
The city of Lauro de Freitas has a large number of luxury condominiums, including Vilas do Atlântico, which is like an autonomous municipality. The region offers a wide range of leisure, gastronomy and accommodation options and has a beautiful beach that is popular with locals at weekends and during long holidays.
Accessibility and Tourist Infrastructure
Its location on the border with Salvador makes it easily accessible for those staying in the capital. The Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport is located on the border of Salvador and Lauro de Freitas, providing easy access to the city’s beaches and attractions. The city has a wide range of accommodation, including hotels, hostels and holiday rentals, to suit different visitor profiles.
Beaches and nature
In Lauro de Freitas you can visit the Mãe Mirinha Tourist Terminal in Portão, enjoy the beaches of Vilas do Atlântico, Ipitanga – good for diving – or Buraquinho, where the Joanes River meets the sea.
Mãe Mirinha de Portão Tourist Terminal
The Mãe Mirinha de Portão Tourist Terminal is a cultural and tourist centre located on the banks of the Joanes River. The site honours Mãe Mirinha do Portão, an important yalorixá of the region and founder of the Terreiro São Jorge Filho da Goméia.
The complex has a pier for boat trips, a stage for cultural performances, restaurants and a vegetable garden, and is considered a place of strong mystical energy.
A bronze plaque marks the spot where Father José de Anchieta is said to have performed a miracle, saving Father Gaspar Lourenço from drowning and managing to return to the riverbank with his clothes dry.
Historical heritage: The Mother Church of Santo Amaro de Ipitanga
The Mother Church of Santo Amaro de Ipitanga is a historical monument dating from the 17th century, a remnant of Portuguese colonisation.
Founded by the Jesuits in 1608, the church is a landmark of the Jesuit Mission of Santo Amaro de Ipitanga, founded on the territory of the Garcia D’Ávila family. In 1758 the area was elevated to the status of a parish and the town that would later become Lauro de Freitas was born.
Leisure and sports
Those looking for a bit of excitement can have fun at the karting track.
On the beaches, which are crowded in summer, there are sailing, surfing, windsurfing and other sports championships. Lauro de Freitas is home to the Jockey Clube da Bahia and the Equus Clube do Cavalo, which organise equestrian events and related activities.
Natural resources and fishing
The Joanes and Ipitanga rivers, navigable by small boat, are ideal for fishing.
