Origin of the name Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca

Named after Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, an Alagoas native and the first President of the Republic of Brazil, it has been declared a National Historic Site by the Ministry of Culture, due to its past and the fact that it was the birthplace of Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, proclaimer of the Brazilian Republic.

Origin of the name Praia do Francês

The origin of the name “Praia do Francês” dates back to the Brazilian colonial period, when the region was invaded by the French in the 17th century.

The name reflects the presence of these colonisers who sought to exploit the natural riches of Brazil, especially in the Northeast.

The beach is named after this part of history, in memory of the French invaders who were in the area during the early days of colonisation.

History of Marechal Deodoro

The city of Santa Maria Madalena da Lagoa do Sul was founded in the 16th century, when it was besieged by French troops in the northeast.

It grew and prospered on the back of its sugar mills and was the capital of Alagoas until 1839, when it lost its position to Maceió. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city was named after its most famous son, the military man who proclaimed the Republic and became Brazil’s first president.

Marechal Deodoro, declared a Historical and Cultural Heritage Site by IPHAN in 2006, preserves traces of the different phases of its past: its historic centre is made up of colonial houses, baroque churches and neoclassical buildings, such as the luxurious Provincial Palace (Rua Dr. Tavares Bastos, s/n, Centro), which housed the provincial government at the beginning of the 19th century and is now the seat of the City Hall.

The municipality is not only rich in cultural heritage, but is also blessed by nature with the beautiful Praia do Francês, whose name – inevitably, history reappears – evokes the invaders from the early days of colonisation.

The municipality of Massagueira, 10 kilometres from Marechal Deodoro and on the banks of the Manguaba lagoon, is still a rustic fishing village, full of bars serving irresistible prawns, crabs and sururus.

However, the region’s gastronomic fame is really due to the local fruit-flavoured cocadas sold along the access road to the village, along with other delicious delicacies such as broas, suspiros and manioc cake.
