History and reconstruction of the community

In the 1980s the community of Tatajuba was buried by the dunes, but this didn’t deter the fishing families who rebuilt a new village known as Nova Tatajuba or Vila Kite.

In search of safer places, the community formed four villages: Nova Tatajuba, Vila São Francisco, Baixa da Tatajuba and Vila Nova. Twice a day, Nova Tatajuba is flooded when an arm of the sea is taken over by high tide, providing ideal conditions for kitesurfing in flat, shallow waters, perfect for freestyle, freeride and beginner kitesurfing.

Ecosystem and access

Since the 19th century, the population has lived in harmony with nature through their way of life.

Due to its geographical location and difficult access, which is only possible by 4×4 vehicles, Tatajuba remains almost untouched, in an ecosystem that includes many fixed and mobile dunes, mangroves, lagoons, cliffs, permanent lagoons and interdune lagoons that connect to the sea at certain times of the year.

The traditional community welcomes tourists and visitors through Communal Tourism.

Natural attractions

On this beach with its blue-green sea, lush coconut groves and wind-sculpted dunes, the main attractions are the Duna do Funil and the Lagoa da Torta.

The Duna do Funil is a wall of sand where sandboarders and buggy riders have fun, and at the Lagoa da Torta you can recharge your batteries by relaxing in the nylon hammocks set up on the shore of the lagoon.

1 Location and conditions

At high tide, Tatajuba beach forms a huge bay in front of the restaurants and chalets, making it an ideal spot for kitesurfing. The conditions are safe and shallow, perfect for beginners and freestyle adventurers.

2. Main places for kitesurfing

  • Lagoa de Tatajuba: A lagoon with shallow, flat waters, perfect for beginners and manoeuvres, with constant wind, plenty of space and calm waters.
  • Praia de Tatajuba: The main beach offers ideal conditions for sea kitesurfing, with moderate waves and strong winds, ideal for intermediate and advanced kitesurfers.
  • Lagoa da Torta: Another nearby lagoon, known for its shallow waters, excellent for shallow water kitesurfing without waves, ideal for freestyle.
  • Tatajuba Dunes: The surrounding dunes offer stunning scenery and open areas for kite launching and landing, with plenty of space and consistent winds.
  • Guriú Beach (near Tatajuba): Located between Tatajuba and Jericoacoara, it is known for its excellent kitesurfing conditions, with flat water on the Guriú River, ideal for beginners and technical manoeuvres.

In addition to these locations, Tatajuba and its surroundings offer a unique kitesurfing experience, with impressive natural landscapes and a peaceful, welcoming atmosphere.

3. How to get there

To get to Tatajuba Beach, you usually have to travel from Jericoacoara or Camocim. The drive from Jericoacoara is about 30 kilometres, some of it on sandy tracks, and 4×4 vehicles are ideal.

There are three ways to get to Tatajuba:

  1. Via Fortaleza: From Fortaleza, take the BR-222 or the Sol Poente road to Sobral and then the CE-362 road to Granja. From Granja take the tarmac road to the Parazinho district. From there you’ll need a horse-drawn carriage or buggy as the road to Tatajuba is sandy.
  2. Via Jericoacoara: Follow the same route as for Jericoacoara. After the town of Gijoca, at the fork that leads to Jeri, take the other road and follow the carriage road to the Settlement of Guriú, following the beach, if possible with a 4WD car.
  3. Via Camocim: Cross the Coreaú river by ferry and take a buggy along the beach to Tatajuba. For those with a small car, the second option is more interesting. If you’re travelling by bus, the third option is the best. If you’re travelling by 4×4 car, the first two are relevant.

4. Best time for kitesurfing

The best time to visit Tatajuba is during the dry season, from July to December, when the weather is more stable and conditions for water sports are ideal.

Where to stay

The Community Association of Tatajuba Residents (Acomota) is part of the Ceará Community Tourism Network (Tucum) and organises local accommodation for visitors in local homes and home-based guesthouses. Most visitors choose to stay in Jericoacoara, where there are a variety of inns, hotels and hostels. Tatajuba has some more rustic and charming options for those seeking a quieter and more immersive experience.

BOTTOM LINE

Tatajuba is a destination that combines natural beauty, community culture and excellent kitesurfing conditions, attracting both beginners and experienced kitesurfers. If you’re looking for a place to connect with nature and enjoy the sport, Tatajuba is the perfect choice.
