Arpoador beach in Tutóia

Founded on March 28th 1938, the name “Tutóia” means “sheet of sand”. Some say its true meaning is “good water” in the language of the Tupi Indians who also inhabited the area.

With an extensive coastline, the dunes of the Little Lençóis Maranhenses surround many of its beaches and lagoons. This justifies the name given to it by the Tremembés Indians who lived in the region in the 18th century.

Tutóia is a micro-region of the Lençóis Maranhenses, known for its natural attractions, including dunes, lagoons and beaches.

During the rainy season (from January to July) it is possible to enjoy the natural pools formed between the dunes, whose waters are crystal clear, unlike those of the sea, which are more turbid due to the influence of the mangroves.

Tips on Tutóia, the Parnaíba Delta and Lençóis Maranhenses

Historical background of Tutóia

The settlement was founded on the left bank of the Tutóia River, where it flows into the canal of the same name, formed by the western branch of the Parnaíba River. The first inhabitants of the region were the Tremembés Indians, known for their bravery. In 1727 there were two data of six leagues measured and demarcated by the Indians.

Under the name of Viçosa, Tutóia was promoted to the category of town in 1758, but continued to be known by its present name. In 1871, due to its slow development, the town was transferred to Barreirinhas and became a backwater. In 1890, the town reacted to this situation by separating from Barreirinhas and becoming an autonomous municipality.

In 1901, the seat of the municipality was transferred to the town of Porto Salina, which had been founded in 1822, when Colonel Paulino Gomes Nunes began his commercial activities on the left bank of the river. On that occasion, Porto Salina, under the name of Tutóia, was elevated to the category of town, becoming the definitive seat of the municipality.

Tutóia became a city in 1938.
