Indian Day
In Brazil, 19 April is celebrated as Indian Day. For many indigenous people, however, this date symbolises another struggle against prejudice and the conquest of rights.
According to the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI), there are around 1 million indigenous people in Brazil, belonging to more than 250 different ethnic groups.
In Paraíba, there are more than 25,000 Indians, according to IBGE data, making it the fourth state in the northeast with the highest concentration of indigenous communities.
The Tabajara ethnic groups are mainly located on the South coast of Paraíba and include municipalities such as Conde, Alhandra and Pitimbu.
The Potiguara, which already have demarcated areas, are concentrated in the towns of Baía da Traição, Marcação and Rio Tinto, on the north coast.
Júlio Macuxi and cultural conservation
Júlio Macuxi, known as Julindo, was born in Belém do Pará and, after living in Brasília, settled in Paraíba with his wife and children to relive the history of his ancestors and to offer his children a balance between city and country.
He is the owner of the Território Macuxí, a place known for welcoming visitors and nature lovers.
To support himself and promote indigenous culture, Júlio created Território Macuxí, located in the municipality of Conde, just 30 kilometres from João Pessoa, which attracts tourists who want to experience contact with nature.
He notes that some ethnic groups are promoting a form of ecocultural tourism, where visitors have the opportunity to learn about their customs, such as dances, handicrafts and cuisine, resulting in a rich cultural exchange and the preservation of indigenous culture.
The Macuxí family and ecotourism
Close to the bustling beaches of Paraíba’s South Coast, the Macuxí family is committed to keeping the indigenous tradition of their ancestors alive, offering visitors the chance to experience the daily life of Brazil’s first inhabitants.
Access to the Territory of the Macuxí is paid for, and visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as mud baths, swimming in the river, forest trails and fruit picking.
This offer of a balance between urban and rural life is one of the main attractions of the site.
Visitors welcome
Visitors are welcome to the Macuxí Territory, where the entrance fee gives you access to the community.
Here you can take mud and river baths, hike through the forest, pick fruit and take part in the daily life of the Macuxí family.
The area is also home to the headquarters of the United Naturist Movement (NU), which welcomes naturists and non-naturists alike.
The delights on offer include camping, hiking, trails, bathing in rivers and streams, kayaking, as well as enjoying the seasonal fruits and the tabatinga bath, a white clay bath.
The tour can last a whole day, but it is strictly forbidden to pollute, deforest, hunt or set fires. Visits must be booked in advance.
Access to Macuxí Territory
To get to the Macuxí Territory, visitors travelling from João Pessoa should take the PB-008 to the Jacumã binary.
The entire route is asphalted and the final stretch of clay is about 500 metres long and easy to drive on. The area is well signposted, making it easy for visitors to find their way around.
