Nine Islands Archipelago in Maceió enchants tourists
The Archipelago of the Nine Islands is a stunning fluvial-marine archipelago located in the Mundaú Lagoon, in the Metropolitan Region of Maceió.
For those planning to visit Maceió in Alagoas, one of the most popular tours is the Nine Islands Archipelago.
Boarding Point
The boarding point is located in Pontal da Barra, a charming district in the capital of Alagoas. The schooner sails through the waters of the Mundaú Lagoon, which covers an area of 27 km² and where the islands are located.
Tour Attractions
Walking through Pontal da Barra, visitors can see several signs along the streets highlighting the tour to the Nine Islands Archipelago.
A schooner sails through the waters of the Mundaú-Manguaba lagoon complex, taking tourists to the small beach at Barra Nova.
During the tour, which departs from one of the various piers in the area, you can explore the archipelago, which consists of eight islands in the capital of Alagoas and one in Marechal Deodoro, a neighbouring municipality.

The islands of the archipelago
The archipelago is made up of the following islands: Ilha das Andorinhas, Ilha do Irineu (Pescador), Ilha do Fogo, Ilha de Santa Marta, Ilha do Almirante, Ilha de Um Coqueiro Só, Ilha das Cabras, Ilha Bora Bora and Ilha de Santa Rita (Marechal Deodoro).
History and importance of each island
- Ilha das Andorinhas (Island of the Swallows): This island takes its name from the fact that it is part of the migratory route of the swallows; in summer it is common to find several nests of these birds.
- Ilha do Irineu (Fisherman’s Island): In honour of Senhor Irineu, an old fisherman from the region, known throughout Brazil for being one of the few trígamos in the country.
- Ilha do Fogo: Its name comes from an old alembic distillery that used to exist there, which went bankrupt due to the high consumption of the product by its own employees.
- Ilha de Santa Marta: Named in honour of Santa Marta.
- Ilha do Almirante (Admiral’s Island): Named in honour of a former owner, a Navy Admiral, who lived there until his death.
- Ilha de Um Coqueiro Só: During a flood in 1989, the island was devastated by the waters of the lagoon, leaving only a single coconut tree, which gave the place its name.
- Ilha das Cabras (Goat Island): So named because its former inhabitants had a herd of goats, which was dismantled because of its negative environmental impact.
- Bora Bora Island: So named because people responded to an invitation to visit the island by shortening the word ’embora’ to ‘bora’. A hotel project for the site has been blocked by the IMA.
- Ilha de Santa Rita: This is the largest lake island in the country, covering more than 12 square kilometres, and is a nature reserve. It is made up of the villages of Santa Rita, Siriba, Jacaré and Barra Nova and is named after a saint.
Tour experience
Throughout the schooner’s journey on the lagoon waters, visitors can enjoy a variety of landscapes until they reach the small beach, where there is a stop for swimming, leisure and fun.
The site has a simple structure, including a small floating bar serving a variety of snacks, as well as kayaks and banana boats.
Tour duration
The tour takes approximately four hours, including the stopover. We recommend the schooner, which departs from Pontal at 1.30pm and returns at around 4.30pm, allowing you to enjoy a beautiful sunset to end the day in a memorable way.
