The Fumaça Waterfall: An unmissable destination
The Cachoeira da Fumaça is one of the most famous attractions of the Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia, located in the Vale do Capão, a region between the municipalities of Lençóis and Palmeira.
Features of the waterfall
Cachoeira da Fumaça is considered the second largest waterfall in the country, with a free fall of over 360 metres.
Its impressive height causes the water to spray, creating a mist that can be seen from afar, especially on sunny days.

How to get there
To get to the Waterfall in the Chapada Diamantina National Park, you have to drive about 75 kilometres to the start of the trail that leads to the waterfall.
The trail, which is considered moderate, takes about two hours to walk up the Serra da Larguinha, through the Campos da Fumaça and finally to the top of the waterfall.
The walk is well worth it, with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
Importance of visiting
The Waterfall has an average altitude of 1000 metres and is one of the must-see sites in the Chapada Diamantina National Park.
In addition to its natural beauty, the area around the waterfall offers several hiking trails where visitors can explore the rich local biodiversity and enjoy panoramic views.

The water from the small stream that rises on the plateau falls from an imposing height, dissipating in the wind in a fine mist that disappears before reaching the ground 340 metres below.

The start of the Cachoeira da Fumaça from above trail is in the village of Caetê-Açu, in the municipality of Palmeiras.
The trail runs along the top of the Vale do Capão to the falls of Cachoeira da Fumaça.
The most difficult part is the initial, 350m, climb, where you can see Morrão on one side and the Vale do Capão on the other.
The trail is well marked all the way to the end, with the only natural obstacles being small streams. The vegetation is a mixture of cerrado and campos rupestres.

- Average journey time: 4 to 6 hours (round trip)
The Capão Valley
Next to Cachoeira da Fumaça, on the other side of the hill, is the village of Caeté Açu, better known as Vale do Capão.
The first impression of Capão is of a place straight out of a fairy tale, where elves and gnomes mix with privileged mortals in search of a balance with nature.
The difference with other places in the Chapada lies in the concept developed more than two decades ago by the alternative communities that have settled in Capão in search of a more natural and spiritual life.
